When you’re trying to start a web comic, there are two important steps you need to take – creation of the website that’ll have the comic and drawing the comics. Well, everyone thinks that it’s easier said than done! In fact, many people feel terrified when they’re asked to create an online platform for hosting their comic creations. Well, with ComicPress, they shouldn’t be!

Actively branded and sold as ‘The ultimate WordPress comic publishing theme’, ComicPress is actually a very good one! It’s already in use by several popular web comic publications like Octopus Pie, Foxtrot, Extra Life, Nuklear Power and more! When you use ComicPress, the way your comics get represented on the Internet is a proof enough that it’s not a theme created by a handful of amateurs.

When using ComicPress for your online comics, you can select between two different display modes – the blog view and the comic view. By default, the system shows a blog below your latest comic. However, you can display just the blog or just the comic and save on the remaining website area, to display anything else you’d like.

How to install ComicPress theme on your WordPress installation?

In this short tutorial, I’ll take you through the process of successfully installing the ComicPress theme on your WordPress installation. I presume that you’ve already installed a valid and working version of WordPress on your website that’s hosted not by the WordPress.com, but your own server.

WordPress is by far the most popular CMS (Content Management System) known to mankind and is used by millions of people throughout the world for blogging, web shops, company portals and web comics. What’s best is that you don’t have to pay anything for it, as it completely free! You can go through several guides and manuals available on the Internet if you need to learn about installing WordPress and building a WordPress site.

Part 1
Once you have WordPress installed and running, access the ‘Themes’ area from within the ‘Appearance’. You’ll see couple of tabs on the top – ‘Manage Themes’ and ‘Install Themes’. Click on the ‘Install Themes’ and look up ‘ComicPress’ from the provided search button.
You’ll be shown the latest version of ComicPress, which is 4.2.2 as of now. Click the ‘Install’ button against its name and it’ll initiate the ComicPress installation process.
Once installed, you’ll have to click on the ‘Activate’ button to get the fun started!

Part 2
Now, go to the ‘Plugins’ section (on the WordPress sidebar) and click on ‘Add New’ under it. Lookup the ‘ComicPress Manager’ and ‘Theme Companion’ plugins using the search bar. Install and activate these plugins as well. You’ll be automatically asked to install any plugins after the ComicPress installation. It can be done either at that time, or later by accessing the ‘Plugins’ option from the WordPress sidebar.

Part 3
Now click on the ‘Posts’ option on the top of the WordPress sidebar and click on ‘Categories’ under it. Add two new categories named ‘Blog’ and ‘Comic’ using this option. Once done, you’ll have three categories available for your posts – Blog, Comic and Uncategorized.

Part 4
Click on the ‘Posts’ again, and then ‘ComicPress’ and then ‘Manager Config’. Once done, scroll down to the page’s bottom and click on the ‘First Run.’ Doing so will create all the required folder structures to help you manage your published comics and publish an RSS feed too.
Click on the ‘ComicPress Config’ button from inside the Posts -> ComicPress and verify that your ComicPress installation has indeed detected the new ‘Comic’ and ‘Blog’ categories you had created.

Part 5
You can configure your ComicPress installation any way you like through the ‘ComicPress Options’ under the ‘Appearance’ button on the WordPress sidebar. All the available options are pretty easy-to-understand and self-explanatory.

Part 6
It’s time to publish your very first comic! You can do it by clicking on ‘ComicPress’ under the ‘Posts’ on the WordPress sidebar. Thereafter, all you need to do is upload a doodle!
Just explore all the options available inside ComicPress and you’ll soon be on your way to become a web comic pro par excellence!
